Commanding God

What kind of a sin would you call it when people command God to do a certain thing?

I should call it a presumptuous sin, to say the very least. And I should say that it approaches blasphemy.

Again—Commanding God

You will remember answering a question not long ago as to whether it was right to command the Lord. I thought at the time of a passage which reads, “Concerning the work of my hands command ye me.” Where it is to be found I do not know, but somewhere in the Old Testament. Perhaps the party who suggested it to the one who wrote you might like to hear from you on the passage, as well as I myself.

Thank you for reminding me of the passage, which you will find in Isaiah 45, verse 11: ‘Thus saith Jehovah, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command ye me.” This is a gracious word from our God. Yet it does not mean what is often meant by those who teach that in prayer we have a right to command God, in the sense of demanding from Him what is asked, without regard as to whether the thing asked is according to His will. It was against this teaching that the former answer was directed.
